The ETC-86 is a high-velocity anti-materiel projectile designed for the ETCC-5 'Flashpoint' electrothermal chemical carbine, representing the most advanced conventional-caliber ammunition in regular military procurement. Unlike traditional cartridges that rely on chemical propellant ignition, the ETC-86 uses a liquid propellant that is ignited and plasma-boosted by the weapon's integrated capacitor bank. The result is a muzzle velocity of 1,850 m/s — roughly twice that of conventional rifle ammunition — with corresponding increases in kinetic energy and armor penetration.

The projectile itself is a tungsten-alloy penetrator in a discarding sabot, optimized for defeating hardened targets at extended range. The liquid propellant is contained in a sealed cartridge that integrates with the weapon's propellant injection system — the capacitor bank generates a plasma arc that flash-vaporizes the propellant, producing chamber pressures approximately three times higher than conventional ammunition. This extreme pressure is managed by the ETCC-5's reinforced chamber and controlled-erosion barrel liner, both of which have limited service lives that make the weapon expensive to maintain.

The 10-round box magazine includes an integrated 40mL liquid propellant cartridge that feeds the injection system. Changing magazines also changes propellant supply, which simplifies field logistics but means the entire magazine assembly is a relatively expensive consumable. Empty magazines can be refilled at armorer stations with compatible propellant, but the precision tolerances of the injection system mean that third-party propellant formulations frequently cause misfires or, in worst cases, chamber detonations.
